'De Markthal' is a covered market building that is open to the public seven days a week. Here you'll find fresh (seasonal) products, delicacies, and food from all over the world.
In 'De Markthal' there are several cosy restaurants and cooking shops. There is also a supermarket and a 4-layer parking garage which has been declared to be the best in Europe. This huge shopping is located in the Blaak area is also a residential complex. Above and around the 'indoor market' there are 228 apartments. The market hall in combination with the luxury housing makes this the first of its kind.
The construction of this multifunctional building started in 2009 and the opening to the public followed on October 1st, 2014. One of the gems of 'De Markthal' is its ceiling, which consists of a work of art that is the size of two football pitches. This artwork is called the 'Horn of Plenty' and it's made by Arno Coenen and Iris Roskam. The ceiling includes colourful images of flowers and insects in combination with food. Architects are 'MVRDV & INBO' (2014).
